1950s USA

The novel was written/first published in 1959 and the children originate from America.

Life in the US at that time was very different and there was lots of racial segregation.

Research the racial segregation of the time and answer the following questions.

1. How were African Americans and white people treated differently?
2. What did white people (in general) think of black people at the time?
3. Were there different laws for the two races? Give 3 examples.
4. Note down 6 interesting facts you find.
5. What was the Civil Rights movement and when did it take place?
On page 12, we are told that ‘At home in Charleston, South Carolina, no black person came near white people.’ Find information about how blacks were treated in South Carolina before the 1950s, when Walkabout was written. ?

a) Dot point 10 facts you can find

b) Write a paragraph of 100 words on what life would have been like for an African American.

TIME MACHINE

Instead of traveling into the book, write a scene or story in which the character(s) travel out of the book into today or another time period.
Firstly, choose a period of time that they are going to wake up in - it can be today, sometime in the past or sometime in the future.
Write about the struggles they face - there must be some sort of conflict (it can be internal!).
Do they try to get home?

CULTURAL AWARENESS PROJECT

You will be completing this project in groups of 3 or 4.

You are to choose a theme and three or four activities to complete as part of an Indigenous Awareness Campaign. The campaign is designed to educate people about the needs of Indigenous Australians today and their culture.

You may pick one of the following themes, or arrange an alternative with me:
  • TREATMENT: Encouraging people to treat Indigenous Australians better
  • FUNDING/AID: Indigenous Australians to receive more funding/aid/help
  • CULTURE: Promoting the culture of Indigenous Australians

You need to pick three or four different ways to present your campaign (three for groups 1-3, four for group 4). You may pick from the list or arrange one with me:
  • T-shirt
  • Poster
  • Mural/painting
  • Flyer/brochure
  • Video
  • Poem
  • Short story (Creative)
  • Comic strip
  • Letter-to-the-editor
  • Song

You may choose to work together on each one, or delegate one task per person. Do not rush your task, take care to do it carefully and to your best ability. Make sure that the theme is threaded through each task. You may also choose to have words, pictures, symbols, images, phrases etc that link them together as well. It needs to be clear that they are all part of the same campaign.

Your assignment will be due at the end of the last class of the term, Friday 16 September. You will be given class time to complete it. You will receive a group grade/mark.

The groups will be as follows:
GROUP 1

Noah A

GROUP 2
