INSTRUCTIONS

Your presentation must focus on an issue relevant to Australians that has been dealt with by the Australian media since October 2015. It must be a reasoned, well-argued oral presentation which persuades the audience to agree with your point of view.

You are welcome to select your own issue, but it must be approved by your teacher by the last week of Kickstart 2015.

You will be presenting them the second class back of 2016. Your talk cannot exceed 5 minutes; you must finish your sentence at this time. You should not spend more than 5 hours preparing your talk.

It should be an issue with two sides. E.g. Australia should increase the number of refugees it allows in each year.

TIPS

O V E R A L L

  • Bring emotion and passion into your speech - have the sentence length and tone of your speech change and use carefully placed pauses for effect.
  • Practice a lot in front of the mirror and family members
  • Maintain eye contact with the audience throughout the entire speech
  • Do not overuse one persuasive technique (e.g. statistics) - mix it up
  • A nice technique to use in this is to called 'bookending', where your speech begins and ends similarly (e.g. with the same quote or rhetorical question.
  • Your topic must be explained clearly and in detail
  • Your opinion should be clearly stated and developed throughout your presentation
  • No visual aids
  • Reference should be made to at least three different sources in regards to the issue
  • You must show clear evidence of preparation and planning.

I N T R O D U C T I O N

  • Have an interesting opening - do not start with 'My name is... and I am speaking on...' - start with a quote, anecdote or rhetorical question.
  • Build the drama

M I D D L E

  • Prove your contention here - do thorough research
  • A suggestion is to follow what is done in debating: have three broad ideas/arguments/pieces of evidence that you are going to break down and discuss
  • Like an essay, be sure you keep on topic by linking back to your main argument throughout

EFFECTIVE PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES

  • You must use persuasive techniques to convince the audience of your point of view.
  • Some suggestions are:
    • Rule of threes: 'The good, the bad and the ugly', 'Veni, vidi, vici' (I came, I saw, I conquered).
  • Note: Rhetorical questions are often overused, so use these sparingly.

C O N C L U S I O N

  • Summarise your ideas here and restate your contention
